While I am completely grossed out by the subject matter, this book is worth the price for the structural information alone. I have followed Debbie’s work since I first “met” her on Flickr in 2007 or so. I was always fascinated by the seemingly impossible (gravitationally speaking) cakes she produced. I was thrilled with the (really freaky) two-headed pig cake, as Debbie provided instructions that I could use for my very first attempt at a standing 3D cake. While my My Little Pony was no where near being as perfect and polished as Debbie’s work, there is NO way I would have been able to even attempt such a thing without some help. The entire time I was working on that cake, I was inwardly fuming at sugarartist “radkoguy”‘s review relegating Debbie’s book to the bargain book bin. Firstly: What a rotten thing to say! Secondly: So what if some of the designs are “hardly ground-breaking”? I have a gigantic collection of cake books, and I have been decorating for quite a few years now, and I have yet to see another book with this kind of information in it. There are plenty of very useful techniques demonstrated here. My summation: The designs are completely gross, but that was the entire point here. There is a ton of useful information for creating sculpted cakes in general, and I’m grateful to Debbie for sharing her knowledge with us. I’m looking forward to Debbie’s next book!
I am so happy to see Debbie Goard finally write a book! She is one of the most talented cake designers out there and she IS “OUT THERE!” lol. This book is written so that someone with basic cake construction, airbrushing and fondant skills can manage to re-create some of the wonderful cakes in the book. Not really written for someone with very basic or elementary cake skills but if you have delivered a few Wedding cakes that have not toppled or collapsed and have your basic fondant skill and would like a bit of a challenge, then THIS book is for you. I love the fact that Debbie Goard has included the templates in a pouch at the end of the book. Debbie, then takes the extra step to tell you what to do to preserve these templates. The cakes in “TWISTED CAKES” by DEBBIE GOARD can be done. You can’t really fail with her instructions, picture tutorials and you can take many, many ideas from how she stages her cakes. Great job Debbie, I can’t wait for her next book to come out.
This book gives only a smidgen of Debbie’s “art”. I have used her talent for several cakes now and even cupcakes. Although my cakes weren’t scary, evil, creepy, or from the dark side…if I ever need one of those, she is my “go to” girl. She gives step-by-step instructions and pictures and templates for any of you do-it-yourselfers. I have it on my coffee table and it’s definitely a conversation starter. Go Debbie!!
