Do you have ADD? Well, I do! So there are a number of reasons I like this book. First of all, I love how shamelessly self-promoting Mr. Fieri is even in his own book. I already bought it–why does he have to keep convincing me that he’s totally awesome and parties with his bestie Sammy Hagar all the time? Anyway, once you kind of get over the rodomontade–wait, actually it’s so astounding that you never get over it. You can almost hear him as if he were right there reading to you–fantasy, nightmare–it’s quite the experience. In fact, I have read it so closely just for its entertainment value that I finally can’t see the harm in loving yourself too much when you are *this* personable. In brief, you hate his guts so hard that you end up falling in love. It’s like that. I can only say this because the recipes are very, very good. I checked it out from the library first and kind of left it around where my husband might see it and *think about the possibility* of cooking. Then I tried out a few recipes myself and, finally (selfishly) decided to buy it for my sweetie for Christmas, “a gift that keeps on giving.” Guy On Fire is chock full of color photos and black and white sketches, as well as useful information about cooking on different types of grills, and it’s hardbound so you can abuse it like you should. All these colorful group photos, food photography, personal narrative, anecdotes–not to mention descriptive recipes and technique–packaged up in its tattooed guy aesthetic makes Guy On Fire a practical cultural artifact of our grotesque but tasty nation. I would say this is a perfect gateway cook book for cooks who are comfortable grilling but not very adventurous, because it dabbles in somewhat unusual ingredients and flavor combinations, but also has crowdpleasers like oh, Donkey Burger (there’s bacon but no donkey on that). Or maybe for those like me who enjoy cooking and eating but find grilling anathema. I should note there’s a (much too?) large section on “tailgating” but for people who are into that, it might be handy if they just decide they want to go crazy and win at tailgating. In fact, it’s a great gift for someone whom you’d like to trick into cooking because whether they view it as an ironic gag or not, they will be so mesmerized by all the crazy stuff going on here that they won’t be able to help themselves. You will soon be gorging on grilled, marinated octopus that someone other than you has run through the spin cycle in the washing machine in order to tenderize it. Win/win.
