Author Lela Migrov, a Professor of Otolaryngology and practicing surgeon, is also an artist and photographer with a passion for French pastry. Her life and work is divided between Paris and Tel Aviv, but her food fancy is wholly French – pastries, that is! She combines her gustatory wealth wither artistic sensitivity in presenting this personal guidebook to the haut patisserie parisienne. In her introductory remarks Dr. Migrov states, ‘This book was initially supposed to depict the variety of delicious pastries that can be found in Paris. I soon realized that most places regularly change their menu and offer new creations every month. This tradition likely came into being for two reasons: first, the Chef-patissiers are usually very talented individuals who constantly search for new flavors and presentations, and second, thousands of locals and tourists visit luxurious cafes and pastisseries daily, and are attracted to new creations of high quality. I wish you all a pleasant read followed by an even more pleasant culinary adventure.’ What follows is an array of brilliantly beautiful color photographs of creams, frostings, éclairs, profiteroles, petits choux, chouqettes, Mille-Feuille, fraisiers, brioche, chocolate mousse, chocolate cake, tartelette aux fruits, macarron, passion fruits, croissant, tarte au citron, flan, le financier, la religieuse, and elegance each framed buy her photographs and her art ‘imaginations’. The history and meaning of each pastry is well written, as is the list of where to find each pastry in Paris. Colorful, informative and completely entertaining, this is a perfect coffee table book and affine gift for the traveler. Grady Harp, May 17
Warning: if by any chance you decide to read this book after coming home from a long day of work or if you’re having a slow afternoon and find yourself hungry and unwilling to cook, do not read it, this will make you go straight to the kitchen and start to make something that resembles even in appearance to a pastry as depicted in this book. When it comes to food, the one that intrigues me the most are the desserts, and this book fills me with even more curiosity about how to prepare pastry and a lot more equally delicious and unique desserts, the exquisite details on everything here along with some nice pictures only will increase the desire to try them and this guide not only tells you how to prepare them and also tell you where to look for them if you decide to go visit Paris, I like these kind of guides, it tell you exactly what you need to know.
This coffee table booklet is an expressive composition that connects your sense of taste with the visual beauty of French patisserie and reconnects that with an artistic expression in the form of words of impression, art with colour, lines and composition of the author as an artist in her core. We see a feast of traditional bakery eats in all their glory , photographed to tantalise all your senses with mouthwatering descriptions in the form of writing and visual art. Beauty of word and image so well brought together. Scarlett Jensen 31 May 2017
