In terms of food research, this may very well be the best book I have ever come across. It literally changed my life. In fact, by following what was laid out in terms of healthy foods and changing my diet to better match the suggestions listed here, I dropped 40 pounds without ever dieting. It is a wealth of information and I cannot stress how helpful this book was for me. On a side note, I use it in my classroom for reference in teaching biology, anatomy and physiology.
Excellent resource that is logically organized, well-indexed, and cites scientific journals and specific scientists, MDs, and nutritionists. Use it primarily from the index or browse to find the good you’re getting from vegetables and fruits in today’s meal. You can look up individual foods or diseases & conditions (like diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, cancer, etc.). Dr. Bowden writes in an enthusiastic, accessible style that encourages improvement in diet through nutrition-specific information about fruits, vegetables, nuts & spices—while moving readers away from fast food & sugar. Medical schools would do well to introduce their students to nutrition as a tool in the physician’s healing toolbox (make MDs more than legal drug dealers or medicine dispensers). This book provides an excellent start as a reference.
This is a GREAT book! I bought it for myself and found it so interesting and well done that I have given it to a number of my friends for gifts. It is beautifully arranged with color photos of veggies, fruit, spices, meat, and much more., with excellent descriptions of why these 150 selections were chosen as the healthiest foods. Anyone interested in nutrition, food in general, will find this a handsome addition to their culinary library. Items that are the preferred ‘healthiest’ are starred. I keep my book in the kitchen so I can reference it as I prepare, change, or add items in recipes. I will say that I have certainly expanded my food choices since buying my copy. My friends continue to give me rave compliments, too, as they also love this book by nutritionist Jonny Bowden. This book is certainly a learning experience in food choices. I also have some of Bowden’s other books which are also well written, interesting and on a variety of health related topics. This book will be a great gift book for your food loving friends … and make sure you buy one for yourself!
