Note: This review is for the paperback BOOK edition. The Kindle edition has fewer recipes! I am a big fan of “The Chew”. It is a program that I record and look forward to in the evenings when I watch television. This book is divided by the seasons and features recipes from each of the hosts. Every recipe has an indicator bar that denotes cooking time, skill level, prep time and cost. Icons indicate whether a recipe is “Light & Healthy”, “Simple Italian”, “Viewer’s Choice”, “Two-Fer (Two Meals in One)”, “5-in-5” (5 ingredients in 5 minutes), “Kid Friendly” or “Cocktail”. Most (but not all) feature a photo. The book also has interviews with the hosts, photos of celebrity guests on the show and sections about the holidays, entertaining, etc. Recipes include: Michael Symon: Spaghetti Squash Fritters Roasted Chicken with Sweet Potatoes and Sage Cast-Iron Pork Pie Crispy Lime and Cilantro Chicken Wings Brussels Sprouts A La “Russ ” Chocolate Pumpkin Pie Braised Pork Shanks White Beans, Pork & Collard Greens Soup Champagne Crown Roast Holiday Mac-N’-Cheese Casserole Chicken Chili Deep Dish Pizza Casserole Grilled Bacon, Chocolate Hazelnut Sandwich Ricotta, Mint and Spring Pea Bruschetta Carrots with Feta and Mint Spring Vegetable Pasta with Chive Bread Crumbs Asparagus and Goat Cheese Frittata Grilled Salmon with Shaved Carrots and Peanut Salad Beer-Battered Fish & Chips Paella Pot Roast with Shaved Carrot Salad Fried Clam Sandwich Twice Fried Chicken Corn Doggin’ Big Mike Burger Carla Hall: Pan-Seared Turkey with Gremolata Batter Fried Apple Rings Chew Chew Clusters 10-Gallon Apple Pie Cranberry Soda Winter Green Salad Eggs in Heaven Chili Con Carla Chocoholic Whoopie Pies Irish Soda Bread Curried Chicken & Dumplings Red Velvet Cake Banana Pudding Rhubarb Punch Grandma Thelma’s Fried Chicken Blueberry Hand Pies Peach Cobbler Clinton Kelly: Eggplant Parmigianino General Tso’s Chicken Lemon Sage Turkey BLT Bloody Mary The Stinton Pomegranate Sunset Hot Muttered Bum Roles Royce Potato Leek Soup Super Bowl Punch The Warm and Toasty Spicy Grapefruit Margarita (“Clinton Caliente”) Bacon, Egg and Cheese Casserole Mint Julep Strawberry White Wine Cooler Punch Turkey Sliders White Sangria Zombie Daphne Oz: Roasted Autumn Vegetables Eggs with Sweet Potato Apple Pancakes Stuffed Mushrooms Mushrooms and Vegetable Stuffing Warrior Salad Slow Cooker Peachy Chicken Veggie Chili Sweet Phyllo Packets Coconut Pecan Pound Cake Watermelon Gazpacho Grilled Vegetable and Peach Summer Salad Grilled Eggplant with Greek Yogurt Superfoods Smoothie Daphne’s Best Burger Dry Rub Baby Back Ribs with Scalloped Potatoes Frozen Fruit Sorbet Mario Batali: Chestnut Crepes with Mushrooms & Radicchio Salad Monte Cristo Sandwich Chile Chicken Flautas Wine-Stained Pasta with Sausage Meatballs and Cauliflower Chestnut Merguez Stuffing Chilaquiles Eggs in Hell Grilled Chicken and Fennel Salad Pork Au Poivre Mario’s Restrictor Plate Chili Meatloaf Alla Mario Spicy Shrimp Cocktail Roman-Style Artichokes Mom’s Chicken with Saffron, Olives and Onions Big Turkey Meatball Subs Sebadas White Gazpacho with Frozen Grapes Sweet Corn with Onions and Basil Summer Scafata Mussels Alla Piastra Fettuccine with Lobster, Tomatoes and Saffron Cheese Stuffed Mortadella on Bruschetta T-Bone Fiorentina
If you enjoy the show, you will like the book. It gives details about how the show was developed and came together. The hosts write about their food philosophy and their experiences on the show. Each host has a variety of recipes from appetizers to desserts. I purchased the book new from Amazon.
My mother watches the show daily. Loves the folks and their interactions, and the recipes. She loves the book and the behind the scenes details. She likes the recipes. She is making a list of what we are going to make together. I gave it 5 stars because she loves the show, people, and recipes. Keep in mind this is not a ‘traditional’ type recipe book with an index and nothing but recipes organized in a methodical way. This book tries to capture the way the show is on air….. with the anecdotes, stories, pictures, and chefs’ interactions. If you are looking strictly for a recipe book, you ”may” be disappointed. I gave it 5 stars because I think it does capture what the entire show is about… people, stories, and food.
