I have reviewed a number of cookbooks for the Vine programme. Some of the books have been cheap and a bit nasty in their quality of printing and photographs, others have had recipes that have been so brief that they cannot be followed or some that are so lavish that they cannot be easily made. There are a rare few that are beautifully printed, are clear in their instructions and when finished, are delicious to eat and I feel that this book ticks all of these boxes.
This is a “how to” cookbook which I feel that is aimed at the 30 something male, who wants to impress others with the finished product. This book is a cooking course that is designed to give the reader more confidence in the kitchen by building incrementally from recipe to recipe. It is not in the same league as the brilliant Delia Smith How to Cook/Cookery Course that starts at a very basic level and moves on looking at every aspect of cooking, the author assumes some prior knowledge. The book itself is beautifully printed and feels top quality. The pictures are minimal but they serve illustrative purpose they are meant to. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the end results are worth the effort. The only minor criticism is in the fact that you do need expensive implements for some of the recipes, which the novice in the kitchen may not have.
I love the quality of the book and the writing style. The recipes are easy to follow and most are easy to prepare. I like the book and would recommend it to most novice cooks.
